This is a naturally occurring fungus or yeast that normally lives on the skin and inside the body, such as in the mouth, throat, gut, and vagina. It usually does not cause infections unless it grows out of control or if it enters deep into the body. Some of the infections it can cause are known as thrush, candidiasis, or candida. It can become a very serious infection in people whose immune systems are compromised. Candida auris is an invasive form of candidiasis and is a serious infection that can affect the blood, heart, brain, eyes, bones, and other parts of the body. It is an emerging, multidrug-resistant type of Candida that presents a serious global health threat throughout the world, including North America and Europe. Candidemia is a bloodstream infection that spreads easily in healthcare facilities, and is a common infection that people get in hospitals. It causes several thousand deaths a year. Vaginal cadida is very common and can cause vaginal itching, soreness, pain during intercourse, urination issues, and a funky vaginal discharge. Taking antibiotics can cause vaginal candida, which is one of several reasons why you should only take antibiotics when absolutely necessary. Having a weakened immune system due to any number of reasons can also lead to vaginal candida. Antifungals are given to treat all forms of candida.
