CHANCROID

A sexually transmitted infection caused by the relatively inert bacteria Haemophilus ducreyi. It results in a genital ulcer that is painful and tender. Once the lymph nodes become involved, fever, chills, and malaise may also develop. Other symptoms include painful urination, vaginal discharge, rectal bleeding, pain with bowel movements, and dyspareunia. Treatment with antibiotics is usually successful, although when it is associated with HIV, the infection does not necessarily respond well.
