CRABS (PUBIC CRAB LICE)

Sexually transmitted lice that live on pubic hair and can make a person itch to the point of near insanity. Crabs can sometimes be found on leg hair, armpit hair, mustaches, beards, eyebrows, or eyelashes. Crabs have six legs, with two of them looking like the claws of a crab. They drink human blood and will often die within a day or two of leaving a person’s body, as they can’t survive without the body’s warmth or blood. Lice found on the head are usually head lice, not pubic lice, and animals don’t get or spread pubic lice. Treatment for crab lice includes using an over-the-counter lotion that contains 1% permethrin or a combination of pyrethrins and piperonyl butoxide. Please consult the CDC’s website www.cdc.gov/parasites/lice/ for how to wash clothes and bedding, and for how to get rid of the nits (lice eggs).
