ECTOPIC PREGNANCY

An ectopic pregnancy is where an embryo implants in one of the Fallopian Tubes instead of in the uterus, although up to 10% of ectopic pregnancies can occur in the ovary, cervix, abdomen or on a prior C-section scar. Ectopic pregnancies are potentially life threatening for the woman and should be treated as a medical emergency. Approximately 2% of all pregnancies are ectopic, and will usually cause a home pregnancy test to give a positive reading. The first warning signs of an ectopic pregnancy will often be light vaginal bleeding and pelvic or abdominal pain. If a woman has any concerns that she might be having an ectopic pregnancy, she should call her healthcare provider immediately or go to a hospital emergency department.
