ENDOCRINE DISRUPTERS or ENDOCRINE DISRUPTING CHEMICALS (EDCs)

Substances that interfere with the normal function of the body’s endocrine system, which is a network of glands and organs that produce, store, and secrete hormones. Endocrine disruptors have been linked to numerous adverse human health outcomes including alterations in sperm quality and fertility, abnormalities in sex organs, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, early puberty, altered nervous system function, immune function, certain cancers, respiratory problems, metabolic issues, diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular problems, growth and development, neurological and learning disabilities, and more. Endocrine disruptors are found in some sex toys, personal care products, plastic food containters, some foods, medical supplies, and manufactured products. Some EDCs trick our body into thinking that they are hormones, some keep natural hormones from doing their job, some will increase or decrease the levels of hormones in our blood, and some EDCs can change how sensitive our bodies are to different hormones.
